Siani and Bruno Biondi. The cardboard in a workmanlike.

Creation and printing in a limited number of copies of the catalogue dedicated to 20 artworks realised with corrugated cardboard. Siani, the producer of the material, one of the largest in Europe at the time, having noticed some of my creations exhibited in a private studio wanted to commission me the artworks where I would have to use only its unique materials. The catalogue reproduces the complete series of the 20 achievements, and on the occasion of its finalisation and printing, it has been requested the drafting by an art lover and copywriter of an introductory text.

When the cardboard is not a packet can be art.

Let’s say the word cardboard, and we will think immediately of poor material. A house made of cardboard. A machine made of cardboard. A cardboard wall. Something fragile and unimportant. It is time to start looking better, to the cardboard. It’s time to discover as can be lightweight, rugged, straightforward, honest, clean, the cardboard. And even how much can be beautiful, the cardboard. Bruno Biondi must have made this discovery, when he decided to create these works of cardboard (or rather, by cardboard, or even with cardboard). Must have discovered, in working, paste and paint this noble material, its simple and moving inner beauty. A discovery that now it is also ours. Using as a raw material different quality of cardboard (rough, smooth, thick, thin), this young artist from Milan gave birth to artworks from the wild and linear charm. The subtle regularity of the cardboard is cut by strong signs, from irregular lines, as the result of final, gentle violence. The structure of the cardboard is disconnected, tested, laying bare its secrets. The result is these twenty works of a rare balance of sweet composure, refined harmony. Not a monument to the cardboard, not an elegy, instead of a kind of journey, discovery, humble tribute to a material which shows who can understand his secret and its unexpected elegance.
